Is Citra Still Working, and Should You Still Use It?

Yes, Citra still works. The last build still installs and plays Nintendo 3DS games on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. What changed is that Citra is no longer updated. Is Citra still working right now?

Yes. Citra still runs, and it still plays your 3DS games. Nothing was switched off from a distance. You open the program, load a game and play, just like before.

Why does Citra still run if no one updates it?

Because it is a finished program that lives on your device. Citra does not need a login. It does not need a server to check in with. Once it is installed, it runs on its own, fully offline.

An emulator like this keeps working for years after its team leaves. It would only break if your operating system changed in a very deep way. For now, it runs fine on current systems.

What happened to Citra?

Citra was shut down by its own developers. The same team also built a Switch emulator. Nintendo took legal action, and both sides reached a settlement. As part of that deal, the developers took Citra offline. The website, the code page and the official downloads all went dark on the same day.

Here is the part that saved it. Citra was open source. That means its code was public and free to reuse. Soon after the shutdown, other developers picked up that code and carried it on. A public project that someone continues on their own is called a fork. Two forks came first. Later they joined into one project.

But the code did not die with the name. It moved ahead under new hands. So the Citra name is frozen, while the work behind it kept moving.

No. There is no official Citra for iPhone or iPad. Citra was built for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android only. Some unofficial iOS ports exist, but they are unstable and hard to trust. Is Citra safe to use?

Yes, the emulator itself is safe. It is not a virus, and it does not harm your device. The real risk is where you get it. The official site is gone, so many random reuploads exist. Some of them hide unwanted software inside.

It depends on how you connect. Private and direct connections between friends still work, because they do not rely on the closed project.
