Dumping 3DS Game Cartridges

To use your Nintendo 3DS games with Citra, you must dump them from a real 3DS console.You cannot dump physical cartridges using a PC alone. Dumping a cartridge does not include DLC or updates, because those are stored on the SD card. You must dump them separately.

Recommended Method: Using GodMode9

Thanks to sighax and boot9strap, GodMode9 is the easiest and most reliable tool for dumping 3DS game cartridges.

Requirements

To get started, you need:

  • The latest version of GodMode9
  • A 3DS system with boot9strap installed
  • An SD card with enough free space (8GB or more recommended)
  • An SD card reader (or wireless transfer tools)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Set Up GodMode9

Follow the official quick-start guide to install GodMode9 on your 3DS.Using boot9strap is recommended for full compatibility.

2. Insert Your SD Card

Place the SD card into your 3DS system.

3. Boot Into GodMode9

  • Hold START
  • Press POWER
  • The system will boot into GodMode9.

You will now see the GodMode9 Root Screen.

4. Access the Game Cartridge

  • Navigate with the D-Pad
  • Select [C:] GAMECART
  • Press A

5. Dump the Cartridge

  • Select [TitleID]_[version].trim.3ds
  • Choose NCSD image options…
  • Select Decrypt file (0:/gm9/out)

GodMode9 will now create a decrypted .3ds file of your cartridge.

6. Finish the Process

  • When the dump is complete, press A to continue.
  • Hold R + START to shut down the 3DS.
  • Remove the SD card and insert it into your computer.

7. Copy Your Game File

  • Go to: /gm9/out/
  • Copy the .3ds file to your computer.This is your game dump.

Using the Dump in Citra

You can load your dumped 3DS game in two ways:

  1. File → Load File
  2. Add your game folder using Add New Game Directory in the main Citra window.

Citra will automatically detect and list the game.

Troubleshooting: Dumping Errors

If the dump fails or shows an error: Make sure you are using the latest version of GodMode9. Updating usually fixes most issues.
