Rockford enters the mine when the first tunnel opens, and the mission begins with a direct goal to collect gems before the exit unlocks. Each cave shows a clear layout filled with dirt, falling boulders, and simple hazards that react the moment Rockford moves. Enemies crawl through certain paths, forcing careful steps to avoid being cornered. Every stage starts with a fixed number of gems that must be gathered to reach the exit door, and the challenge begins immediately when the first tile is cleared.

Most gameplay uses simple grid-based movement. Rockford digs through dirt one space at a time, creating new paths while watching for loose boulders that fall if the dirt below them is removed. Gems drop in the same way, letting them be collected safely if handled correctly. Certain caves include switches, destructible blocks, or enemies that patrol predictable routes. Timing becomes important when pushing boulders to trap enemies or opening new paths without blocking the exit. Each action gives instant feedback, showing whether a move opened a new route or caused a hazard.

As levels continue, caves grow more complex with tighter spaces, heavier enemy presence, and boulder arrangements that require planning before moving. New stage types appear, such as puzzle-based layouts, time-limited challenges, and caves with moving elements that shift when certain tiles are touched. Extra modes unlock after completing early levels, offering variants that change goals or increase difficulty. Later caves demand precise digging and careful movement to prevent collapses. The adventure ends once all sets of caves are cleared and Rockford completes the deepest tunnels in the collection.
