Batman arrives in Blackgate Prison when an alert signals multiple inmate uprisings, and the first mission begins with a direct goal to navigate the prison corridors and restore order while avoiding dangerous foes. Each area opens immediately with clearly visible enemies, doors, and interactive gadgets that must be used to advance. Short prompts from Alfred or Commissioner Gordon indicate which route to take or which threat to prioritize. Every stage starts directly with a simple objective such as defeating enemies, reaching a checkpoint, or disabling security systems.

Combat relies on Batman’s brawling skills, gadgets, and stealth. Melee attacks, counters, and combos take down armed inmates, while gadgets like the Batarang, Batclaw, or smoke bombs are used to disable or distract opponents. Some sections require stealth approaches to bypass heavily guarded areas, while others include environmental hazards like electrified floors, falling crates, or narrow ledges that must be navigated carefully. Each attack or gadget use responds instantly, showing damage dealt or enemy status.

Later missions introduce stronger enemies, mini-bosses, and complex areas with multiple paths, requiring both combat and stealth strategies. Unlockable upgrades enhance gadgets, combat moves, and armor to handle tougher foes. Levels expand into new wings of the prison, rooftops, and underground sections with multi-stage objectives. Short dialogue cues indicate which area or enemy must be tackled next. The campaign ends once all inmate leaders are defeated, the uprisings are quelled, and Blackgate is fully secured.
